Right on the wave of my last blog about how to retrofit your laptop, comes a blog on how to really retrofit your laptop with the latest gadgets. What I did not mention was that I attempted to add my own internal USB Wireless dongle into my Sony R505. I bought a cheap small usb wireless dongle and took the plastic cover off and soldered wireless to one of the USB ports on my laptop. What I didn’t know is that the USB port internally was very weak and I ended up breaking the port. I can change out the port for a new one and try again but have not spent the time to do so. There where things I didn’t think about this mod that this guy did, is to solder to an USB interface and not just the USB port itself and to also add a USB hub. I have plenty of uses for all the port of a usb hub in my Sony R505 and there is a perfect spot for it too. I could add that 802.11g Wireless Dongle, a Bluetooth Dongle and a Flash Drive that would be used for Vista’s ReadyBoost. I can see Vista’s ReadyBoost very helpful for laptops since a lot of laptops have slow spinning hard drive and it would use less power. So instead caching to the power-hungry slow hard drive, Vista will cache to a faster less power intense flash drive. The Only hard thing about this Mod is figuring out where to put the USB Hub and where to wire it too. I am going to find a better place to wire my USB hub to instead of an existing usb port. This is the blog that I originally got the idea from, let me know what you guys think.
