Radiohead is releasing their new cd In Rainbows without a record label, completely on their own. This will definitely grab attention from the big labels. As well as releasing the CD without a label they are letting customers name the price.
They are selling the album as a Discbox and Download. I just paid $8 and will be able to download a digital copy on the 10th. The discbox will include “In rainbows, on CD and on 2 X 12 in. heavyweight vinyl records. A second, enhanced CD contains more new songs, along with digital photographs and artwork. The discbox also includes artwork and lyric booklets. All are encased in a hardback book and slipcase.” The discbox has a set price at 40 pounds or about 80 dollars. The other format, Downloading as I said they are letting you name the price. This could be the first major push for artists to get away from big labels and start directly marketing to their fans.
