Well if you read my first blog about my Treo 700wx microphone dying on me, I mentioned something about installing Windows Mobile 6 on this Treo. Also, I replaced the microphone on this treo and both were very easy! Lets start off with the microphone, I ended buying a new microphone off ebay for $7. All you have to do is take off the battery cover, take out the stylus and remove the smaller rubber piece and there are about 7 t-6 screws which you really need a t-6 screwdriver but I ended up using a small flathead that did the job but somewhat stripped the screws. Pay attention to the screw behind the rubber piece as that is a little bit longer than the other ones. When you are taking the screws off makesure the battery is out and the screen is facing down. Once the screws are out, carefully remove the plastic backing. When the backing is removed the microphone is smushed into the plastic backing just simply remove the old one and put in the new one. Pay attention to the camera as this is a floating piece, I would then place the camera in the backing and then put the phone on the backing with the face up. Once attached then screw in all the screws and BOOM, new working microphone!
Well now I have this perfectly working Treo that I no longer had a use for since I have my new Q9c. I was reading a couple weeks back that someone successfully porting WM6 to the treo, so I started searching high and low on how to do it. Actualy, it was very simple and only took around an hour to complete. I’ll try to point you guys in the right direction if you are looking to do it yourself as well. First go to this forum where it details what steps you need to do and see if you feel comfortable doing it. Then scroll further down and there is a list of ROMs that you can download and install on your Treo. This ROM supposively works for Sprint, Alltell and Verizon but it uses the Sprint updater so I’m not sure how well it works with Alltell and Verizon since I have a Sprint phone. I initially installed the WM6 Full ROM but it had a lot of extra software on it that I didn’t want and too much customization, so I ended up trying the WM6 Trimmed rom and it was much better. The full ROM looked like it was a hacked version where as the trimmed version actually looked like it was an OEM install. After the install you can tell the OS looked better and was more stable. Thanks to Ebag and his crew they were able to port this and test it out!
Well I’m now wishing I took pictures of both so I can add to the site, but sometimes I get patient and lazy to do so. If you guys try it out let me know how it goes. I actually have my phone up on ebay so hopefully the new customization adds value to the Treo!
