If you are like me, you use Vista at home but then you are stuck using XP at work or with an older computer. Now whatever you view point on vista is, there are definitely some features that Vista brings that would be nice to have in XP. Now I can’t solve most of those, but one of them is small and painles. XPs start menu was always a little wacky, everytime you installed something it basically stored them in order of install date …. most of the time. Vista’s start menu, if you use it, has all the folders listed alphabetically which is nice. To get this in XP all you need to do is delete 1 Registry Key. Follow these 4 simple steps.

1) Go to Start Menu -> Run -> Type ‘regedit’

2)Navigate to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu\Menu” or “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu2\Menu”

3) Delete the “Order” key by right clicking on it and select delete.

4) Of course with XP, for this change to take effect you must restart Windows.

Voila! In 4 simple steps you organized your start menu in alphabetical order. What I’m going to do next is create a small application that will take care of this for you. It will be added to my Three C Development software suite that provides windows tweaks for the everyday user.
